Kate’s journey from migraines to marathon

MRF is an official charity partner with the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon.

Kate, a chronic migraine sufferer, has joined Team MRF to run the race of her dreams while raising money for migraine research, a cause close to her heart. Read her story below.

My journey with migraines began over 20 years ago. I've spent far too many hours in the emergency room, infusion center, and in bed.

At one of my lowest points a couple of years ago, I was sure I was going to live the rest of my life in constant pain. I was discouraged and losing hope that things would ever get better.

Then I decided to take up running again. I started small, running a 5K or a 10K here and there, and then jumped to a half marathon. I was hooked.

In 2014, I committed myself to running at least 1 mile every day, regardless of how I felt. I found that on my worst days, when the pain was so bad I could barely open my eyes, running actually seemed to help. It didn't cure the migraine, but I felt ... BETTER. Since then, I've completed multiple half marathons, a full marathon, and a 50K trail ultra.

When the opportunity arose to run the TCS New York City Marathon and raise money for an amazing cause that hits so close to home, I jumped at it. Not only am I running to prove that migraine sufferers CAN still have quality of life, but I'm running for an organization determined to fund the best researchers to help find causes and improve treatments for migraines.

We're grateful to be part of Kate's story and proud to have her as a member of Team MRF in 2016.
