Raising Money for
Migraine Research

2011 and 2017 MRF Research Grantee
FINAL REPORT: the film has been completed
When Susanna Styron’s daughter Emma had her first migraine, she had no idea what was happening or what to do. The hidden world of suffering Susanna stumbled upon while trying to get help for her daughter ultimately gave her the inspiration to make a documentary film about the experience. She teamed up with Jacki Ochs, with whom she’d made a previous documentary and whose family members also suffer from migraine, and began a nearly eight-year journey culminating in Out of My Head, a feature-length documentary film.
The Human Arts Association received two grants from the Migraine Research Foundation, providing essential support early on and later for marketing the film. MRF recognized the power that a film could have in educating the public and was one of the early funders of the film. In addition to education, Out of My Head can help to change perception about migraine; reduce the stigma around it, and raise awareness of the need for more and better research.
